Schooner Timberwind - History of a worthy Maine Schooner
The schooner Timberwind was built in 1931 on Union Wharf in Portland
Maine. Formerly the Portland Pilot, she served as a pilot schooner from 1931 to
1969. Built to carry pilots to and from ships entering or leaving Portland
Harbor, she is ruggedly built using sturdy white oak frames and
planks insuring her seaworthiness through years of storms in the icy
waters along the Maine coast. She stands unique as being the only pilot
schooner built in Maine, and she has never left her native waters.
Converted for the passenger trade in 1970, the Timberwind accommodates 20
guests. Because of the Timberwind's "deep draft", the cabins are cozy
but still provide plenty of standing headroom and storage for your belongings.
All cabins have 12-volt electric lamps, fresh water and basins, soap, towels,
warm blankets, fresh sheets, pillows and feature portholes for fresh air. The Timberwind
is stiff, fast, and weatherly, and has been designated as a National Historic
Landmark. She is truly a sailor's boat.

Captain Bob and Dawn Tassi
At the conclusion of a successful career in the music industry,
Captain Bob Tassi has been fortunate enough to pursue another of his passions,
and in his second career as Captain of the Schooner Timberwind. Bob holds a
100-ton Masters license and has 37 years of sailing experience. He has crossed
oceans and raced one design J/boats on a national level. After serving for four
years in the Maine Windjammer fleet as a deckhand, mate and captain, he
commands his ship expertly and safely in keeping with the best traditions of
the Maine Schooners and captains of the 19th Century.
Dawn,a native of Maine, mother of two, registered nurse and ship's cook
has taken her love of Down East cuisine while combining her training on a
wood stove to delight the guests of the Timberwind to tastes and smells
of traditional New England fare. Captain Bob and Dawn, their two children, Will
and Emily, look forward to sharing an exhilarating sailing adventure aboard the
Timberwind, enjoying great food, and camaraderie with other families that
can only be gained by a common experience-to slow down and connect, if only for
a little while.
