Schooner J & E Riggin - A Historic Windjammer
The J & E Riggin was built in 1927 as an oyster schooner for Charles
Riggin in Dorchester, New Jersey. This windjammer, named after his two
sons Jacob and Edward, both captains of the Riggin, has enjoyed the
reputation of being able and fast and won the only oyster schooner race ever
held on the Delaware Bay in 1929.
Still fast and able, and no longer dredging oysters, the J & E Riggin
has converted to carry passengers and can accommodate 24 guests. The J & E
Riggin was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1991.
The cabins are cozy and comfortable, each with a sink, running water, and
reading lights over the bunks. Every cabin has a porthole and is prepared with
handmade quilts and soaps.
